WAVERLY, Iowa - Coe College scored six runs in the final three innings Tuesday, as the Kohawks knocked off Iowa Conference leader Wartburg 7-4 at Hertel Field.
The Kohawks started the scoring in the second inning, as Nolan Weber (Cascade, Iowa/Cascade) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Andrew Brierton (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove). The lead didn't last for long, as Wartburg scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. In the fifth inning, Wartburg took a 3-1 lead on a two-out single, as two runs came across.
Coe went to work in the seventh inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Weber doubled to center field, as Nolan Arp (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) scored. The Kohawks took the lead for good on a double to left center by Thomas Simon (Morton Grove, Ill./Notre Dame Prep), as he plated Weber and Thomas Kahle (Glenview, Ill./Northridge Prep). Jacob Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Campo Verde) singled to right field, as Simon scored the final run of the inning. Wartburg got a run back in the bottom half on a wild pitch.
The Kohawks added a pair of runs in the eighth inning to put the game away. Colton Knox (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) singled to right field, while Kyle Alvarado (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) moved to third and scored on a fielding error by the right fielder. Jacob Henry (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) then singled to left field, as he drove in Knox for the final run of the game.
Weber drove in a career-high two runs, while Simon tied a career-high with two RBI. Ben Jacobson (Ottosen, Iowa/Humboldt) had a no-decision on the mound, as he gave up three earned runs on seven hits in five innings. Jacobson walked four and struck out five. Jacobson moved into a tie for eighth in school history with 44 career appearances, while becoming the seventh player in school history to throw over 200 innings. He also moved into ninth on the career strikeouts list with 137.
Michael Golinski (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) improved to 3-0 on the mound, as he gave up an earned run on a hit and two walks. Lucas Robbins (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) notched the save, as he struck out two and walked two in three innings. Robbins moved into a tie for second in school history with his 18th appearance this season, while Golinski moved into a tie for seventh with his 16th appearance on the mound. Robbins is now tied for third in single-season school history with four saves this year, while he moved into third on the career list with seven. The win was the 20th of the season, marking the 15th time in school history Coe has hit the mark.
