LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Maliah Fligg (Tiffin, Iowa/Clear Creek-Amana) is one of 25 NCAA Division III softball players to be named to the Schutt Sports/NFCA National Player of the Year Watch List.
A senior pitcher/designated player, Fligg is one of two players from the Iowa Conference to be named to the list. Fligg is joined by Luther shortstop Anna Strien. Fligg is among seven seniors on the list. An initial list of 50 players was released early in the season, with four players remaining from that list. The eventual winner will come from the current list of 25 players. The list is a collaborative effort between the NFCA's Division III Head Coaches and All-America committees. The 10 finalists will be named next month and the winner will be revealed following the conclusion of the season.
Fligg is having a career year in the circle, where she is 14-4 with a 1.91 ERA. In a career-high 21 appearances, she has 15 complete games and three shutouts in 120.2 innings pitched. Fligg has also notched a career-high 67 strikeouts.
Entering the Iowa Conference Tournament this weekend, Fligg ranks ninth in school history in complete games (35) and walks allowed per seven innings (1.92) for her career. She also ranks 10th with eight career shutouts and 11th with 65 career appearances. She is one of 12 players in school history to have started 50 games or more in the circle.
The 20th-ranked Kohawks (29-8, 11-5 IIAC) will be the three seed in this weekend's Iowa Conference Tournament. Coe will face sixth-seeded Loras (22-12, 6-8 IIAC) in the quarterfinals.
