CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Buena Vista scored nine of its 10 runs in two innings on Friday, as the Beavers took the series opener 10-2 against Coe College.
The Kohawks opened the scoring in the third inning. With one out, Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, as Nolan Arp (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) scored from third. The lead didn't stand for long, as the Beavers scored four runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning. Coe cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Kevin DeLaney scored on a throwing error by the catcher, as the lead was cut to 4-2. In the top of the eighth, Buena Vista scored five runs on three hits and three Kohawk errors. The Beavers added their final run in the top of the ninth for the 10-2 final.
DeLaney and Andrew Brierton (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) had two hits apiece to lead the Kohawks, while Jack Strellner (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) added the final hit. Thomas Schaedel (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame Prep) suffered the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits in seven innings as he dropped to 6-2 on the year. Schaedel struck out eight and walked three. He became the 22nd player in school history to surpass 50 strikeouts in a season, while becoming the 17th player in school history to strikeout over 100 in his career. Cal Kragenbrink (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits in a third of an inning. David Keaton (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest ) gave up an earned run on four walks in two-thirds of an innings, while James Christ (Midlothian, Ill./Breman) recorded the final inning, giving up a hit.
The Kohawks (20-15, 12-10 IIAC) close out the regular season on Saturday, as they host Buena Vista (23-14, 14-8 IIAC) in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bill Quinby Field at Daniels Park.
