PELLA, Iowa - The 25th-ranked Coe College softball team fought off a late rally from Washington University in St. Louis Friday, as the Kohawks beat the Bears 2-1 in the NCAA Regional opener.
The first run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Paige Wieland (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) put down a sacrifice bunt with a runner on third, as Madi Miller (Coralville, Iowa/West) beat the throw home to give Coe the 1-0 lead. Coe added to the lead in the sixth inning, as Haley Jones (Waterloo, Iowa/West) hit a sacrifice fly that plated Allie O'Brien (Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) to give Coe a 2-0 lead. The Bears scored their lone run on a double steal in the seventh inning. Washington University in St. Louis had runners on the corners with one out when Alyssa Olson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) struck out the final two batters.
Brianna Gardner (Princeville, Ill./Princeville), O'Brien, Miller and Jess Brooks (Aledo, Ill./Mercer County) each had a hit for the Kohawks. Olson tossed a complete game, as she gave up an earned run on five hits. Olson struck out six and walked one as she improved to 13-5 on the year.
The 25th-ranked Kohawks (30-9) advance to Saturday's round of games and will face 23rd-ranked St. Thomas (34-9). The Tommies beat host Central 10-2 in six innings on Friday. The Kohawks and Tommies faced each other in the first game of the season, with the Kohawks coming away with a 4-2 win. The winner of the game will advance to Sunday's championship game, while the loser will play later in the afternoon on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Pella.
