SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Coe College men's tennis team picked up its seventh NCAA Tournament win in school history Friday, as the Kohawks beat Grinnell 5-0.
Earlier this season, the Kohawks beat the Pioneers 9-0. The meeting was the third time the two schools have squared off in the postseason, with Coe coming away with a 5-1 win in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in both 2012 and 2015.
Coe's first win came at number one doubles, as Josh Pudlo (Lakewood, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Luke Ford (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) beat Cole Miller and Tommy Pitcher 8-3. At number two doubles, Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and Nate Greiner (Polk City, Iowa/North Polk) won their eighth match in the last 10 outings with an 8-4 win over Sam Stickels and Raghuram Inturi. The final doubles win came at number three, as Nate Ackert (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) and James McManus (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) came from behind to beat Will Hamilton and Benjamin Cobin 9-8. The victory was the eighth in the last 10 matches for the pair.
In singles play, Alex Bernt (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus), ranked 48th in the nation, gave Coe a 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hamilton at number five singles. The victory was the 84th of Bernt's career, as he moved into sixth in school history. Pudlo sealed the Kohawk victory at number four singles, as he beat Zach Lane 6-1, 7-5.
The 35th-ranked Kohawks (26-5) advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in school history. Coe will face sixth-ranked Chicago (17-4). The Maroons beat Coe 8-1 and 9-0 in a pair of duals earlier this season. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn. A link to live results is available at CoeAthletics.com.
