CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team held off a ninth inning rally from Luther College Friday night, as the Kohawks stayed alive in the IIAC Tournament with an 8-6 win over the Norse.
The Kohawks wasted no time putting runs on the board with a pair in the first inning. Thomas Simon (Morton Grove, Ill./Notre Dame Prep) singled up the middle to plate Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) for a 1-0 lead. Jacob Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Campo Verde) then doubled down the left field line, as Simon scored for a 2-0 lead. Luther used back-to-back two-out doubles in the second inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Coe started the third inning with three-straight singles to load the bases before Burns grounded into a double play with Jack Strellner (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) scoring on the play.
In the fourth inning, Strellner doubled in Jordan Kaplan (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Nolan Arp (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), as the Kohawks took a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Luther got a one-out run to cut the lead to 5-2. Coe pushed the lead to 7-2 in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, Arp scored on a single by Nolan Weber (Cascade, Iowa/Cascade), while Kyle Alvarado (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) scored on the play after a throwing error.
Coe's final run came in the ninth, as Simon singled to center field to drive in DeLaney. In the bottom of the ninth, Luther scored four unearned runs with two outs to cut the lead to 8-6. The Norse had a runner at second and the tying run at the plate when the game ended.
Simon and DeLaney led the Kohawks with three hits apiece, tying a career-high for Simon. Strellner also tied a career-high with two hits and two RBI. Arp and DeLaney each scored a pair of runs, while Burns and Simon drove in two apiece. Ben Jacobson (Ottosen, Iowa/Humboldt) tossed a complete game on the mound, as he improved to 3-3 on the year. He struck out a career-high 10, while allowing six runs (two earned) on 11 hits and two walks. Jacobson moved into sixth in school history in career innings pitched (214.1), seventh in wins (18) and eighth in strikeouts (149).
