CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Junior Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) dropped a 7-6, 6-2 decision to Wilkes' Courtney Murphy Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA National Singles Championships.
Anderson was up 2-1 in the first set, but Murphy tied the set at 3-3. The two went back-and-forth, with the match being tied 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 before Murphy won the set 7-6. In the second set, Murphy jumped out to a 4-0 lead before winning 6-2 to advance to the second round.
Entering the NCAA Tournament, Anderson was ranked 32nd in the nation and third in the ITA Central Region. Murphy was ranked 12th in the nation and ninth in the ITA Atlantic South Region.
The NCAA National Singles Championships selects the top 32 players from the nation to compete in the final tournament. Having been selected each of the past two seasons, Anderson's selection this year was the 15th time a Kohawk has been invited to the NCAA National Singles Championships. Anderson finishes the season 26-5 in singles play. He enters his senior season with a 79-18 singles record and 73-24 doubles record.
