CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the second-straight week, the Coe football team spotted its opponent a three-possession lead to start the game. This time around, the Kohawks weren't able to rally for a lead, which led to a 27-10 loss to Central.

It was the first time in the last eight games between the two teams that was decided by seven or more points.

On the opening possession of the game, Coe was stopped for negative one yard on the drive. After punting the ball to the Dutch, the Kohawk defense was able to hold Central to a field goal after a 12 play, 53-yard drive. Central was able to convert two third-downs on the drive.

Coe was able to drive into Dutch territory on their second drive, but were forced to punt when they failed to convert a third and 19 situation. Central wasn't able to capitalize, as they were forced to punt after reaching the 50-yard line. Just three plays later, sophomore Patrick Wallace (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) was intercepted by Ryan Schmidt at the Coe 45 yard line. The Coe defense held tough on the next drive, as junior Tate Harrison (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) recovered a botched snap by the Dutch.

After the turnover, Coe gave the ball right back to the Dutch two plays later. Wallace was hit in the backfield, where he coughed up the ball and Austin Hill jumped on it at the Coe 21 yard line. Central was able to score off this turnover, but the Coe defense held again, stopping Central on three plays inside the 10 yard line, forcing the Dutch to kick their second field goal of the game.

After both teams exchanged punts, they also exchanged turnovers once again. Junior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) rushed up the middle, but was hit by Nate Doeden and fumbled the ball. On the very next play, senior Tommy Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) intercepted a pass at the two yard line.

The Central defense forced another three-and-out on the Kohawks, who were forced to punt from their own 25-yard line. Junior Cody Lerch's (Wadena, Iowa/Valley) punt was blocked and returned to the seven yard line, where Central scored just three plays later, putting them ahead 13-0.

On their final drive of the first half, Coe started at its own 23 yard line. A 14 play, 55 yard drive ended with sophomore Elliott Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) missing a 39-yard field goal wide left.

Central wasted no time increasing its lead in the second half, as they took the opening possession 68 yards in just seven plays to make it 20-0 with 11:22 to play in the third quarter.

On Coe's first possession, sophomore Nick Ratchford (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) brought in an eight-yard reception on second down, but fumbled the ball on the play, with the Dutch recovering on their own 27 yard line, ending the Kohawk drive.

The Kohawks put their first points on the scoreboard at the start of the fourth quarter, as Rausa hit a 29-yard field goal with 14:07 to play, making it 20-3 in favor of the Dutch.

After a 63-yard kick return by Central, they scored on the very next play, making in 27-3 with 13:47 to play. With 10:16 to play, the Kohawks put together their longest drive of the game, going 73 yards on 16 plays. The drive ended with Wallace being sacked on fourth and goal from the eight.

Freshman Brad Boyle (New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska) came in to orchestrate the Kohawks only touchdown drive of the game. Coe took over with 2:00 to play at the Central 48-yard line. Boyle completed three of six passes on the drive for 30 yards, but it was senior Michael Szela (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) who pushed across the touchdown for the Kohawks. It was the first career touchdown for Szela. Coe held the Dutch to just seven plays in the fourth quarter, while running 30 of its own.

Hammes finished with a game-high 85 yards rushing on 21 carries. Ratchford caught a game-high eight passes for 65-yards. Both teams combined to have 16 different players catch a pass. The Dutch only had one player with multiple grabs.

Wallace was 19 of 36 for 173 yards, including one interception. Boyle finished the game three of six for 30 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, three Kohawks finished with over 10 tackles. Linebackers Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Josephs) had 13 tackles and Ross Yeast (West Liberty, Iowa/West Liberty) had 12, including 10 in the first half. Senior Aaron Hadenfeldt (Solon, Iowa/Solon) added 10 tackles, including two for a loss.

Coe returns to action next Saturday, as they travel to Luther. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
