MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team beat Cornell 6-3 on Wednesday, as the Kohawks pulled even in the Bremner Cup All-Sports standings at 2-2 this year.
Cornell held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, as Coe's only win came at number one. At the top spot, Lauren French (Raleigh, N.C./North Raleigh Christian) and Haley Resnick (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) beat Julia Thome and Raquel Ruiz 8-0.
The Kohawks won five of the six singles matches to take the win. At number one single, French beat Thome 6-3, 6-3, while Resnick beat Abbey Nelson 6-0, 6-2 at number two singles. At number three singles, Eliza Sunderman (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) beat Ruiz 6-1, 6-2.
At number five singles, Stephanie Bush (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) beat Janice Elkerton 7-5, 6-0. Madison Wilson (Marion, Iowa/Marion) won the first set 6-2 against Megan Pope at number six singles before Pope retired.
The Kohawks (1-2, 0-0 IIAC) will return to action on Saturday, as they host Central (4-0, 2-0 IIAC) and Simpson (2-2, 0-2 IIAC). Coe will face the Dutch at 10 a.m. and the Storm at 1 p.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
