CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team earned a pair of Iowa Conference victories on Saturday, as the Kohawks opened league play with wins over Central and Simpson.
In the opening match of the day, Coe held a 2-1 lead after doubles play against Central. At number one doubles, Lauren French (Raleigh, N.C./North Raleigh Christian) and Lakyn Boltz (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) beat Ashley Maley and EmmaGrace Walter 8-2. The second doubles win came at number two doubles, as Haley Resnick (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) and Eliza Sunderman (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) beat Kari Grindberg and Paige Vannausdle 8-2.
The two teams split the six singles matches, leaving Coe with the 5-4 victory. At number one singles, Resnick beat Maley 6-0, 6-0. French beat Grindberg 6-1, 6-2 at number two singles, while Sunderman beat Walter 6-3, 6-0 at number three singles.
In the final match of the day, the Kohawks swept doubles against Simpson. At number one, Resnick and Sunderman beat Kayla Reusche and Megan Bradley 8-1. French and Boltz beat Kelly Kuebler and Sierra Griffith 8-0 at number two doubles, while Stephanie Bush (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) and Ella White (Roseville, Minn./St. Anthony Village) beat Carter Stacey and Sarah Barry 8-1 at number three doubles.
Resnick opened singled play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Reusche, while Bush beat Kuebler 6-3, 6-0 at number three singles. White beat Stacey 6-1, 6-0 at number three singles, while Tori Montoya (Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) picked up the final singles win at number six, beating Danielle Bates 6-4, 6-2.
The Kohawks (3-2, 2-0 IIAC) return to action on Sunday, as they face defending Iowa Conference Champion Luther (3-1, 3-0 IIAC). Coe and Luther have combined to win the last 15 Iowa Conference Women's Tennis Championships. Last year, Luther beat Coe 5-4, snapping Coe's 40-match Iowa Conference win streak. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Decorah.
