WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College football team struggled to get anything going on Saturday, as Wartburg beat Coe 34-7 at Walston-Hoover Stadium.
The Kohawks punted on their first five possessions of the game, while Wartburg scored a pair of touchdowns on their second and third possessions. On Evan Ellis (Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque)' fourth punt of the day, he boomed one 73 yards to the Wartburg 10 yard line. His punt is tied for the fourth longest in school history and is the third longest in NCAA Division III this season. Coe's final two drives of the half ended in interceptions, but Wartburg wasn't able to score off either and took a 14-0 lead into halftime.
Wartburg marched down the field on the first possession of the second half and scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Matt Sacia to G. Brennecke. On Coe's next possession, Ellis dropped a 66-yard punt to the Wartburg 12 yard line. Coe put together its lone scoring drive of the day on the next drive. Facing fourth-and-seven from the eight-yard line, Quentin White (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell) hit Trevor Noble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) for an eight-yard touchdown pass. The kick by Tristan Connell (Camanche, Iowa/Prince of Peace) cut Wartburg's lead to 21-7 with 2:56 to play in the third quarter.
Sacia hit Riley Brockway for a 15-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. Coe's next two possessions would end in interceptions, with Wartburg scoring another touchdown off the first for the 34-7 victory.
Coe had 99 yards on the ground, while Wartburg rushed for 180. The Knights threw for 360 yards, as Coe had just 116 through the air. Wartburg had 540 yards on 81 plays, while Coe had 215 on 61 plays. The Knights had a 36:46 to 23:14 advantage in time of possession. Coe was 4-of-14 on third downs, while Wartburg was 8-of-17.
Tyler Dralle (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) had 19 carries for a career-high 104 yards rushing. Q. White was 15-of-35 passing for 116 yards with a touchdown and five interceptions. Jonah Alfaro (Long Beach, Calif./Poly) caught a career-high four passes for 25 yards, while Dralle caught a career-high three passes for 43 yards. Demetrius Harper (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) had three receptions for 30 yards, while Tyler Schamel (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) caught three passes for three yards. Ellis finished with seven punts for 334 yards, an average of 47.7 yards per punt with four landing inside the 20 yard line.
Jacob Elsbury (Byron, Ill./Byron) had a game-high 12 tackles, while Dalton Shadle (Morning Sun, Iowa/Mediapolis) added 11. Brian Robertson (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) had a career-high nine, while Robbie Peters (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) tied a career-high with nine tackles. Thomas Meyer (Guttenberg, Iowa/Clayton Ridge) also had a career-high with seven tackles. Coe had six tackles for loss, led by two and a half from Drew Heitland (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy).
