
Cornell forced a three-and-out on the Kohawk offense to open the game, forcing Coe to punt the ball away. The Rams blocked the punt and returned it 20-yards to score the first points of the game. Cornell again forced a three-and-out against the Kohawks on their next drive, but weren't able to capitalize on the defensive stand.
The Kohawks forced the Rams to punt on their next drive. Senior Tommy Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) returned the punt 37-yards to the Ram 11 yard lind. It took the Kohawks just three plays to put the ball in the end zone, as sophomore Michael Rozum (Byron, Ill./Byron) plowed across the line for the score.
The Coe defense stuffed the Rams on three-straight plays, forcing them to punt the ball. The Kohawks took over from that point forward, sustaining an 11-play, 85-yard drive that ended with an eight-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback CJ Feller (Waukegam, Ill./Warren Township) to sophomore Nick Ratchford (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus). The score put the Kohawks ahead 14-7.
On their first possession of the second quarter, the Kohawks put together another long drive, this time going 64-yards on eight plays, as Feller found junior Sam Hammes (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) for 14-yard touchdown pass, his second of the season.
With the Kohawks leading 21-7, Coe put together their third scoring drive with over eight plays, as Breitbach recorded his first career rushing touchdown from five-yards out. It capped an eight-play, 49-yard drive with 2:33 to play in the first half. The Kohawks took a 28-7 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
On their second possession of the second half, Hammes scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to put the Kohawks up 35-7.
Coe kept the Rams off the board again until late in the third quarter, as Cornell scored on 20-yard touchdown pass.
The Kohawks compiled 387 yards of offense on 73 plays, compared to the 178 yards on 64 plays by the Rams. Coe was eight of 15 on third down plays, while holding the Rams to just four of 16 on conversions.
Hammes led the Kohawks with 80-yards rushing and 43-yards receiving. Rozum finished with 52-yards on the ground. Freshman Curtis Cannon (Bellwood, Ill./Nazareth Academy) carried four times for 31-yards in his first career appearance.
Feller finished the day 16 of 28 for 180 yards and two touchdown passes, the first of his career.
Junior Calvin Thomas (Westchester, Ill./St. Joesph's) led all defenders with 13 tackles. He also recored two tackles for a loss. Senior Jordan Wilkens (Altoona, Iowa/SE Polk) recorded two sacks on the day.
The Kohawks return to action next Saturday as they host Loras in their homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Clark Field.
