WAVERLY, Iowa - Coe crowned two champions at the Dick Walker Invite Saturday, as they came away with a second place finish. Defending National Champion Wartburg beat the Kohawks by 24 points for the title.
Coe crowned its first champion at 149 pounds, as senior
Mark Carey (Raytown, Mo./South) went 4-0 to take the title. After earning a first round bye, the top-seeded Carey pinned Taylor Reichs of Wartburg in 4:29. Carey then used a 17-4 major decision over Ellsworth's Ruben Perez to advance to the semifinals, where he won by default over fifth-seeded Torey Stewart of Augsburg.
In the championship match, Carey came from behind for a fall over third-seeded Elias Larson of Trine in 6:35. Carey improved to 12-1 on the year as he won his second-straight tournament title. Also at 149 pounds, sophomore
James Locke (Minneapolis, Minn./South) placed third with a 7-1 record on the day. Locke earned three wins by bonus points as he improved to 16-5 on the season, the most wins of any Kohawk.
The Kohawks second champion came at 184 pounds, as senior
Tyler Burkle (Coggon, Iowa/North-Linn) went 4-0 and won his 100th career match along the way. Burkle advanced to the semifinals with a fall over Kyle Ullery of Trine in 2:13 and a fall over Chris Pokomy of Iowa Lakes in 3:52. In the semifinals, Burkle won by major decision (16-4) over fifth-seeded Ben Scott of Wartburg. In the championship match, Burkle beat second-seeded Todd Becker of Wartburg 6-2. Burkle ran his record to 15-2 on the year, the second most wins on the team.
At 125 pounds, junior
Clayton Rush (Aledo, Ill./Aledo) went 4-1 to finish third. He earned his 75th career win in the third place match. Rush's only loss on the day came to third-seeded Joe Colon of Iowa Central, whom went on to win the title.
Senior
Rob Kramer (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) also placed third with a 4-1 record. Kramer lost a 7-4 decision to Josh Marsh of Iowa Lakes in the semifinals before winning his remaining two matches. All four of Kramer's wins came by fall in the first period. Kramer pinned fifth-seeded Robert Widmer of Cornell in :30, while his longest win lasted 2:07.
Coe returns to action next Sunday as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for Wartburg's Desert Duals.
