CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe and Buena Vista exchanged 14 leads in the game, but the Kohawks had the lead when the final buzzer sounded Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse. The score was also tied nine times, as the Kohawks moved to first place in the Iowa Conference with a 62-60 win.
With the large number of lead changes and ties, neither team led by more than six points. Buena Vista held its largest lead at five points early in the first half, while the Kohawks six-point lead with 4:46 to play was their largest of the game.
Following the Kohawks' largest lead, the Beavers went on a 8-0 run to take a 60-58 lead with 1:55 to play. The 3-point basket by Aubrey Hauswirth would be the final field goal by the Beavers, as Coe closed the game with the final four points. With :57 to play, junior
Kaitlin Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) hit a jumper in the paint to tie the game for the ninth time.
Buena Vista's Brittany Gunn missed a jumper with :27 to play, as junior
Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) grabbed the rebound. After two fouls, sophomore
Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) hit two free throws with :07 to seal the Kohawk win. Buena Vista wasn't able to get a shot off in the final seconds.
Junior
Devvin Rolston (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) led the Kohawks with 16 points. Waskow and sophomore
Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) joined Rolston in double-figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. Waskow also had six rebounds. Junior Kayla LIncoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) had a game-high eight rebounds, while also adding nine points and four assists. Breitbach finished with a game-high five assists and three blocked shots, while also stealing two passes.
Hauswirth led all scorers with 25 points for Buena Vista.
The Kohawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Central. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Pella.
