CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe men's basketball team closed an exciting night of basketball at Eby Fieldhouse Wednesday with a 66-64 win over Iowa Conference leader Buena Vista.  It was the first conference loss for the Beavers, while it was the first win for the Kohawks.
Coe scored the first four points of the game, but Buena Vista answered with a 12-2 run.  The Beavers 12-6 lead with 15:24 to play in the first half was their largest of the game.  The Kohawks returned the favor with a 15-4 run that gave them a lead until nine minutes to play in the game.

The Kohawks opened the first 1:36 of the second half on a 7-1 run, giving them their largest lead of the game at 39-31.  Buena Vista's Doug Bissen sparked a 6-0 Beaver run midway through the second half with a fastbreak dunk, but the Beavers' 51-50 lead with 8:10 to play would be their last of the game.

With :29 to play, Bissen hit a layup cutting the Kohawk lead to one point.  On a well designed inbounds play, junior Joe Parys (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) broke away for a wide open dunk, but was fouled in the act.  Parys hit both free throws, his only two points of the game, to give the Kohawks a 65-62 lead with :26 to play.

Troy Ticknor missed a 3-point basket for the Beavers with :14 left, but Bissen grabbed the rebound and was fouled, making both of his free throw attempts.  Freshman David Mataloni connected on one of his two free throw attempts with :08, sealing the Kohawk win.  The defense held in the final :08, not allowing the Beavers to get a shot off.

Junior Alex Tatman (Humboldt, Iowa/Humboldt) led the Kohawks with 14 points, as he connected on 2-of-4 3-point baskets.  Senior Cass Behrens (Highlands Ranch, Colo., Colo./Mountain Vista) and sophomore Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) each had eight points and three assists. Behrens was also 2-of-4 from downtown.

Junior Dan Borngraeber (Brookfield, Wis./East) added seven points and six rebounds, while Parys had a game-high 10 rebounds.  Freshman Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) had two blocked shots and seven points.

Coe returns to action on Saturday, then they travel to Central.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Pella.
