CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe (10-5, 5-1 IIAC) shot 63 percent from the field, while hitting 13-of-18 3-point attempts, as they rolled Wartburg (9-5, 3-2 IIAC) 85-53 Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse. Six Kohawks hit 3-point baskets, with four of them hitting in multiple numbers.
Coe used a 10-3 run midway through the first half to extend its lead to double-digits for the first time in the game, as they led 23-13 with just under 10 minutes to play in the half. The Knights fought back late in the half, but were held scoreless in the final 3:29 of the first half. Coe got baskets by sophomore's
Alyssa Brockhaus (Sioux City, Iowa/Lawton-Bronson) and
Sarah Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) in the final two minutes to put Coe ahead 38-28 at halftime.
The Kohawks came out on fire in the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the frame in just 2:20. The run kept the Coe lead in double-digits for the remainder of the game. With 12:06 to play, sophomore
Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) hit a 3-point basket that sparked a 10-0 Kohawk run, putting Coe ahead by 28 points. Wartburg would score five of the next seven points, but would never be able to keep the lead under 25 points from that point on.
Wartburg was held without a field goal in the final 4:30 of the game, while its only two points during that stretch came on free throws with 3:19 to play. While the Kohawks were hot shooting, their defense was resilient as well. The Knights shot just 33 percent from the field, while Coe shot 63 percent. The Coe bench outscored Wartburg's 30-15.
Sophomore
Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) led the Kohawks with 19 points, as she connected on 6-of-6 shots from the field, including five from downtown. She also had a game-high four assists. Juniors
Kayla Lincoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) and
Devvin Rolston (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) joined Ware in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. Lincoln also blocked two shots.
Kayla Waskow added nine points, eight rebounds and two steals, while
Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) came off the bench to score seven points, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing four assists.
Coe and Wartburg entered the game first and second in the Iowa Conference. The Kohawks will get another 1-2 showdown on Saturday, as they travel to Simpson (11-3, 4-1 IIAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Indianola.
