DUBUQUE, Iowa - Coe clinched its seventh-straight Iowa Conference Tournament appearance Wednesday night with a 77-56 win over Loras. It was the third win in a week by 21 or more points for the Kohawks, whom improved to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in the Iowa Conference.
With the game tied at seven early, Coe went on a 19-4 run to break it open and never looked back. Sophomore
Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) scored eight of her career-high 22 points during the stretch. Waskow had previously scored 22 points against the Duhawks on Jan. 18. It was her fifth 20 point performance of the season.
The Kohawks closed the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 41-21 lead into halftime. Sophomore
Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) had 10 points in the opening frame, while Waskow dropped 16.
Coe's lead never dropped below 16 points in the second half, as it grew to as much as 23 on numerous occasions. The Kohawks shot 49 percent in the second half, while they went to the free throw line twice.
Juniors
Kayla Lincoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) and
Devvin Rolston (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) joined Waskow and Ware in double figures with 17 and 13 points respectively. The fifth starter, junior
Kaitlin Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) had a game-high six assists and a team-high seven rebounds.
Ware added four assists, while Waskow had four steals. Breitbach, Ware, Rolston and sophomore
Ashley Hood (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware) added two steals apiece.
Coe will have Saturday off before returning to action next Wednesday against Wartburg. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Waverly, as two of the top three teams in the Iowa Conference battle for a first round bye in the IIAC Tournament. Both teams have clinched a spot in the postseason tournament. Coe beat Wartburg 85-53 earlier this season at Eby Fieldhouse.
