Devvin Rolston and Kayla Waskow celebrate Coe's 62-55 win over #24 Simpson.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Saturday was a day for history at Eby Fieldhouse.  For the first time in school history, the Coe women's basketball team beat a team ranked in the top-25, as they beat league-leading Simpson 62-55.  It was just the second time in school history Coe has beaten Simpson.
Coe lead 6-1 with 17:50 to play in the first half, but went cold from the field.  The Kohawks went nearly nine minutes without a field goal, while tallying just two points on a pair of free throws from sophomore Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton).

The Kohawks were able to cut Simpson's lead to one with 6:03 left in the first half, but the Storm closed the opening frame on a 7-2 run, including a pair of free throws from Katie Kitzman with :01 left in the half.

Coe came out on fire to open the second half.  The Kohawks scored 25 of the first 33 points in the half over a 10 minute span, including a 16-0 run that gave Coe a 10 point lead twice.  The Storm would answer with a 13-5 run that cut Coe's lead to two twice, but wouldn't be able to tie the game again.  The Kohawks scored their final eight points of the game from the charity stripe.

The Kohawks were led by Waskow and junior Kayla Lincoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) with 18 and 16 points respectively.  Waskow continued her climb towards the single-season scoring record with her 337th point today.  She moved to eighth with today's performance.  Lincoln had four steals and Waskow finished with two.

Junior Devvin Rolston (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) became the 31st player in school history to score over 500 points with her five points this afternoon.  Junior Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) scored seven points off the bench, while dishing three assists and stealing four passes.  With her three assists, Anciaux moved into third on the school's all-time assists chart with 320.  She also became the 16th player in school history to grab 400 rebounds in a career.

Junior Kaitlin Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) added nine rebounds and eight assists, while also stealing two passes.  Sophomore Ashley Hood (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware) added three assists.

As a team, the Kohawks forced 28 turnovers and outscored Simpson 26-11 off turnovers.  Following a 31 percent shooting effort in the first half, including going 0-for-7 from 3-point range, the Kohawks hit 54 percent of their shots in the second half.  A normally high scoring team in the first half, Coe outscored Simpson 42-28 in the second frame.  The Storm were ranked third in the nation with 79.3 points per game coming into Saturday's game.

Coe will return to action on Wednesday when they host Central.  Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.  The game will be part of the WBCA's Pink Zone.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game in support of Breast Cancer Research.
