STORM LAKE, Iowa - History was made at Siebens Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon, as the Coe women's basketball program won its first Iowa Conference title in school history. Thanks to a 22-4 run in the second half, the Kohawks came away with a 70-61 win over Buena Vista and secured the number one seed in next week's IIAC Tournament.
Coe scored the first four points of the game, but the Beavers quickly took a 7-4 lead with a 7-0 run. With 10:33 to play in the first half, Coe took a 12-11 lead, although it would be their last lead until the 14:13 mark of the second half.
With 3:32 to play in the first half, the Beavers took an eight point lead, their largest of the game. Coe scored six-straight points before Margo Muhlbauer hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Beavers a 26-22 lead at the break.
Junior
Kaitlin Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) hit a jumper with 15:58 to play that sparked Coe's 22-4 run over the next 6:38. At one point during the run, sophomore
Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) scored seven-straight points for Coe. Waskow finished with a team-high 21 points as she moved into fourth-place on the single-season scoring list with 368 points. Waskow also had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Coe's lead would increase to 13 points twice during the remainder of the game, while the Beavers were never able to get within eight points in the final 12 minutes of play. The win gave the Kohawks a season sweep of the Beavers, with the potential to play them in the semifinals of the conference tournament on Thursday.
Breitbach and junior
Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) joined Waskow in double figures with 10 and 15 points apiece. Breitbach added to her double-double with 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Anciaux had three assists as well.
Junior
Kayla Lincoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) became the 22nd player in school history to score 700 points in her career with seven on the day. She also added seven rebounds, while junior
Devvin Rolston (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) had nine points.
As a team the Kohawks shot 30 percent in the first half, while turning the ball over 15 times. Coe made the right changes at halftime as they shot 52 percent in the second half and turned the ball over just five times.
Coe improved to 18-7 on the year, the second most wins in school history. With the number one seed in the Iowa Conference Tournament, Coe will have a first round bye on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Kohawks will face either Buena Vista or Dubuque at 7 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse.
