STORM LAKE, Iowa - Buena Vista never led by more than six points, but the Beavers held on for a 87-84 win over the Kohawks Saturday at Siebens Fieldhouse.  The loss was the second in a row by less than seven points to the top-two teams in the league, following Coe's loss to league champion Central on Wednesday.

Coe led by three with 15:26 to play in the first half before the Beavers went on a 12-2 run to take a 17-12 lead with 12:19 left in the half.  The Kohawks used a 12-2 run of their own late in the first half to take a 10 point lead, but the Beavers cut Coe's lead to 44-37 at the break.

The Kohawks used a 7-1 run early in the second half to take an 11 point lead, the largest of the game for either team.  The Beavers then scored seven-straight points in the next :40 to get back into the game.

With 5:38 to play, the Beavers went on a 13-5 run, as they tried to put the game out of reach, but Coe continued to fight.  The Kohawks were able to get within two points twice in the final 1:18 of the game, but weren't able to tie or take the lead.

Freshman David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) led all scorers with 22 points.  He also had two steals, while connecting on 3-of-8 3-point attempts.  Sophomore Jake Raney (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) and senior Cass Behrens (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) joined Mataloni in double figures with 15 and 14 points apiece.

Raney was 3-of-7 from 3-point range, as sophomore Ryan Baade (Havelock, Iowa/Pocahontas) also hit two 3-point baskets.  Sophomore Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) added nine points in the loss.

As a team, the Kohawks hit 65 percent of their shots in the first half, including 9-of-12 from downtown.  Coe shot 57 percent for the game, while the Beavers hit 51 percent of their shots.
