CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe improved to 6-1 on the tennis courts today as they defeated Wisconsin-Eau Claire 5-4 and St. Ambrose 7-2. Coe trailed 3-0 heading into singles play against the BluGolds, but were able to win five of the six singles matches for the win.


Junior Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) was a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 winner over Phil Loprinzi at number one singles against Wis.-Eau Claire. Senior Greg Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./West) was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at number two singles over Chris Kuna. Sophomore Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 winner against Kevin Fawcett at number four singles.

Sophomore Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) and freshman Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) sealed the Kohawks win with wins at number five and six singles. Roger was a 7-6, 7-5 winner, while Newman won 6-1, 6-0.

Coe earned two doubles wins against St. Ambrose, as Rausa and junior Scott Stegemann (Davenport, Iowa/Central) were 8-0 winners at number one doubles, while Newman and Janssen won 8-1 at number three doubles.

The only loss in singles play for the Kohawks came at number one. Janssen was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at number two, while Khristenko won 6-2, 6-2 at number three singles. Roger and Newman both won 6-0, 6-0 at number four and six singles, while freshman Kyle Tucker (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) was 6-2, 6-3 winner at number five singles.

Coe will return to action next Saturday as they host Carthage and Dubuque at 9 a.m and 5 p.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
