CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In front of a packed house, the Coe women's basketball team defeated Buena Vista 69-64 Thursday night at Eby Fieldhouse. It was just the second Iowa Conference Women's Tournament game played at Eby Fieldhouse, while it was the first semifinal game.
Coe came out firing, as they hit six 3-point baskets in the first half, while the Beavers struggled to shoot 30 percent from the field. The Kohawks held their largest lead of the game at 41-22 with :08 left in the first half. Buena Vista's Jen Allen banked in a 3-point basket as the clock winded down to put Coe ahead 16 at the break.
With 14:27 to play, Buena Vista went on a 12-2 run, cutting Coe's lead to six points with just over 10 minutes to play. With :39 to play, Aubrey Hauswirth hit a 3-point basket to make it a three point game. Coe missed a shot in the final possession, but were able to get the offensive rebound. Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) hit a pair of free throws to seal the game.
Junior
Kayla Lincoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) and Waskow led the Kohawks with a double-double apiece. Lincoln had a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Waskow had 13 points and 11 rebounds. They each had three assists, while Waskow had a pair of steals and Lincoln blocked three shots.
Waskow moved into second place on the single-season scoring list with 381 points, while Lincoln became the 20th player in school history to tally 300 points in a season. Lincoln and sophomore
Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) became just the third and fourth players in school history to hit 50 3-point baskets in a season.
Junior
Devvin Rolston (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) added four assists and two blocks, while junior
Kaitlin Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) had three assists. Coming off the bench, junior
Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) scored 14 points to become the 15th player in school history to score 800 or more points in a career. She also had three steals.
The Kohawks have advanced to the Iowa Conference Tournament Championship game for just the second time in school history. Coe will host Simpson at 4 p.m. Saturday at Eby Fieldhouse. The two teams split games earlier this year, with both winning on their home floor. Coe is 0-2 all-time against Simpson in the IIAC Tournament, with the last loss coming in the 2008 championship game 94-80.
