CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A battle between the two Co-Champions of the Iowa Conference lived up to its billing Saturday afternoon at Eby Fieldhouse.  Two-time defending IIAC Tournament Champion Simpson held off Coe for a 65-61 win, earning the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The two teams exchanged leads during the first 12 minutes of the game, with neither team leading by more than three points.  With 8:01 to play in the first half, Simpson went on a 9-0 run, taking the lead for good.

Junior Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) hit a 3-point basket with :12 left in the first half, cutting Simpson's lead to four.  As time expired, Katie Kitzman hit a jumper in the lane, while being fouled, to add three points to the Storm's lead at the break.

The Kohawks went scoreless for 2:30 early in the second half, allowing the Storm to score six-straight points.  Simpson's lead increased to 11 with the run, the largest of the game, with 14:55 to play.

Following a pair of free throws by Amy Hamilton, the Storm took a seven point lead with 2:13 to play.  Coe quickly put themselves back in the game with back-to-back 3-point baskets by junior Kayla Lincoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) with 1:03 to play.  Simpson's Darrina Bledsoe hit a layup with :30 to play, putting Simpson's lead back to three points.

Junior Devvin Rolston (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) connected on 1-of-2 free throws with :20 to play before Kitzman hit a pair of free throws with :18 left, putting the Storm back up four.  With :07 left, sophomore Kayla Waskow grabbed an offensive rebound and tip-in, making it a two point game.  Mindy Hutchcroft sealed the win for the Storm with a pair of free throws with :05 left on the clock.

Lincoln finished with a game-high 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half.  Lincoln played just four minutes in the first half, as she picked up two early fouls.  She connected on 4-of-5 3-point attempts in the second half.

With 14 points in the game, Waskow broke Amber Karkosh's single-season scoring record of 388 points scored in 2006-07.  Waskow also added five assists.  Junior Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) added 14 points on 4-of-8 3-point shooting.

Junior Kaitlin Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) had seven rebounds and four assists.  Anciaux added three assists, while sophomore Alyssa Brockhaus (Sioux City, Iowa/Lawton-Bronson) had two steals.

Coe will have to wait until Monday morning at 11:30 a.m. to see if they have earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships.  NCAA.com will have a live selection show on their website.
