
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Junior Clayton Rush (Aledo, Ill./Aledo) became just the second wrestler in school history to qualify for two National Championship matches Saturday. Rush defeating defending National Champion Jake Oster of Elmhurst 10-3 to seal his second trip to the center mat.
Rush never trailed in his semifinal match, however he led just 4-3 entering the third period. With :10 to wrestle, Rush put Oster on his back for a five-point move. He nearly had the fall as time expired, as he tacked on another point for riding time. Rush will face third-seeded Tyler Erdman of Elizabethtown in the championship match. The two wrestlers have never faced each other. Rush enters with a 31-2 record, while Erdman is 25-1. They have combined for three falls and two major decisions in the tournament.
At 165 pounds, sophomore Nick LeClere (Coggon, Iowa/North-Linn) dropped an 11-9 decision to seventh-seeded Orlando Ponce of Augsburg. Ponce scored a takedown with :15 left for the win. In the consolation semifinals, LeClere pinned fourth-seeded Michael Morin of Southern Maine in 6:57 to advance to the third place match. Top-seeded Josh Terrell of Dubuque used an escape with :13 to wrestle and a point for riding time to defeat LeClere 4-2 for the second time this season.
Junior Seth Rehn (Oceanside, Calif./Vista) suffered a pin in 5:27 to Cowan Wade of North Central in the consolation quarterfinals, but was a 10-3 winner over Ross Dankers of Concordia in the seventh place match. Dankers had beaten Rehn 7-4 earlier this season.
Senior Tyler Burkle (Coggon, Iowa/North-Linn) went 3-0 on the day to earn third-place honors for the second-straight season. Burkle opened the day with a 9-2 win over fifth-seeded Mike Denver of The College of New Jersey. A 9-0 major decision over Josh Wake of Oneonta State sent him to the third-place match against second-seeded Ben Engelland of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Burkle used two takedowns in the final :35 and a point for riding time to win 9-3.
Senior Mitch Sander (Clarence, Iowa/North Cedar) ended his career with a win in the seventh-place match for the second-straight year. Sander was pinned by sixth-seeded Adam Sutter of Lakeland in the consolation quarterfinals, but was a 2-0 winner over eighth-seeded Andrew Witzel of Augsburg.
Augsburg has officially won the team championship,with Wisconsin-La Crosse and Wartburg battling for second. Coe has locked in fourth place for the third-straight season.
