CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - The Coe men's tennis team took second place at this weekend's Kerry Seward Invitational, hosted by Wabash College. Coe won all three doubles flights, while winning the flight six singles championship.
Juniors
Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and
Scott Stegemann
(Davenport, Iowa/Central) won the title at flight one doubles. The pair
defeated Gilliam and Pollom 8-5 of Hanover in the first round before
taking an 8-1 win over Frank and Kowalczyk of Ohio Northern in the
semifinals. The duo held on for an 8-6 win over Ramoni and Lotz of
Carthage in the championship match.
Rausa went 2-1 in singles play on the weekend, earning third place with a
6-3, 6-2 win over Frank in Flight One Singles. Stegemann also placed
third in singles play at flight three. He defeated Wabash's Ricky
Ritter 6-2, 6-2 in the third-place match.
Senior
Greg Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./West) and freshman
Curtis Newman
(Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) were champions at flight two doubles. Janssen and
Newman earned a 8-5 opening round win over Parshall and Vinson of
Albion, while defeating Schiro and Schwenke of Carthage 8-6 in the
semifinals. The pair were 8-4 winners over Dewey and Bayless of Wabash
in the finals.
Janssen was one of three Kohawks to make the championship round in
singles play. After two victories, Janssen dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision
ot Schiro at flight two singles. Newman also qualified for the
championship match with two wins in the opening round. He lost a 6-1,
1-6, 8-10 match to Matt Whiteside of Carthage in the flight five singles
championships.
Sophomore
Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) and
freshman
Kyle Tucker (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) took the title at at flight
three doubles. The pair beat Ritter and Towne of Wabash 8-4 and
Becerra and Hendrickson of Rose-Hulman 9-8 (11-9) in the first two
rounds. They beat Delk and Whiteside of Carthage 8-6 in the finals.
Tucker earned the Kohawks only individual title at flight six singles.
He beat Chris Tapping of Albion 6-0, 6-3 in the first round and Alex
McLean of Carthage 6-4, 6-1 in the first two rounds. He beat Towne 6-1,
6-1 in the championship match.
Roger was third at flight four singles. After dropping a semifinal
match, he beat Joseph Glass of Transylvania 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 for third
place.
Carthage won the team title with 65 points, while Coe was second with 64
points. Wabash was third with 41 points. The Kohawks return to action
on Saturday when they host Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 1 p.m.
