CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kohawks weathered a 30 minute lightning delay Monday, as they held on to beat Simpson 5-2.  The win gave the Kohawks the series win over the Storm, as they split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Simpson put the first run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning.  Despite not allowing a hit, the Kohawks committed two errors that led to the first run for the Storm.  Coe quickly answered back in the bottom half of the inning.  Freshman Nick Stein (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) walked to lead off the inning.  Down 0-2, junior Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) hit his second home run of the series to center field, giving the Kohawks a 2-0 lead.

Following a 30-minute lightning delay, play resumed at 3:15 p.m.  Coe took advantage of the break, as junior Kevin Schuver (Marion, Iowa/Marion) was hit by a pitch.  Following an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt attempt, sophomore John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) doubled to center field, moving Schuver to third.  With two outs, Schuver scored on a wild pitch.

The Storm scored their final run of the game on a Dave Johnson home run with one out in the sixth.  Coe once again answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth.  With one out, Velvick singled up the middle.  Velvick was then thrown out at second on a fielders choice by senior Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Algonquin).

With two outs, senior Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) singled to left field and advanced to third on a fielding error by the left fielder that allowed Richmond to score.  Schuver then walked before getting in a run down at second base that allowed Schisler to steal home.

Simpson loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but weren't able to plate any runs on two hits and an error in the inning.

Velvick finished with a game-high three hits, while Schisler added two.  Sophomore Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) and Logan each had doubles.  Junior Kevin Baranowski (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) improved to 3-2 on the year in seven innings on the hill.  He struck out four, while giving up just one earned run and six hits.  Freshman Ben Strellner (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) earned his first career save in two innings of work.  He struck out two, while throwing 19 of his 23 pitches for strikes.

Coe returns to Iowa Conference action on Wednesday, as they host Central in a nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
