CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe softball team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon, as they swept the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 8-1 and 9-1.  The Kohawks tallied 23 hits in the doubleheader, while holding the titans to eight.
Coe scored quickly in the first game, putting a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning.  Senior Abby Wedemeier  (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) singled through the right side for the game's first hit.  A sacrifice bunt by freshman Callie Morningstar (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) moved Wedemeier to second.  A ground ball to the first baseman by senior Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) moved Wedemeier to third, while she scored on a double to left center by fellow senior Mackenzie Lang (Urbandale, Iowa/Johnston).

The Kohawks broke the game open with five runs in the third inning.  Morningstar was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Zaugg moved Morningstar to second on a sacrifice bunt before Lang walked.  With one out, freshman Katie Gibson (Bonne Terre, Mo./North County) singled through the right side, plating Morningstar and moving Lang to third.  An infield single by senior Katie Kramer (Nevada, Iowa/Ames) plated Lang and moved sophomore Micah Nardini (Madrid, Iowa/Madrid), whom was pinch running for Gibson, to second. 

A single by sophomore Amanda Hanson (Riverside, Iowa/Highland)  loaded the bases for sophomore pitcher Ashlee Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland).  Simon ripped a double through the right side, scoring all three runners.

Coe added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.  With one out, Morningstar hit her second home run of the year.  With two outs, Lang walked for the second time in the game.  A single up the middle by sophomore Sidney Ridout (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) moved Lang to second.  Gibson then singled down the right field line, plating Lang for the final run of the game.

Morningstar, Gibson, Kramer and Simon finished with two hits apiece in the opener.  Morningstar and Lang scored twice, while Simon drove in three runs and Gibson drove in a pair.  Simon earned her 16th win in the circle.  She struck out 16 batters, while giving up just three hits.

The Kohawks once again scored first in the nightcap.  Wedemeier singled through the left side on a full count to start the inning.  With one out, Wedemeier stole second before moving to third on a fly ball by Zaugg.  Lang singled to shortstop, plating Wedemeier for the game's first run.

Coe tacked on two runs in the second inning, as Ridout reached on an error to start the inning.  A walk by Gibson moved Ridout to second.  Junior CC Williams (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) reached on an error, moving freshman Jalisa Phillips (Calmar, Iowa/South WInneshiek), whom was pinch running for Gibson, to second and Ridout to third.  A single through the left side by junior Shannon Aguero (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) plated both Phillips and Ridout. 

The Kohawks extended their lead to 4-0 with a run in the third inning.  With one out, Zaugg singled through the left side.  A ground ball by Lang moved Zaugg to second.  Ridout singled down the right field line, plating Zaugg.

For the second time on the day, the Kohawks scored five runs in an inning, ending the game in the bottom of the sixth.  Williams led the inning off by reaching on an error.  A single by Aguero moved sophomore Jacki Finley (Lone Tree, Iowa/Lone Tree), whom was pinch running for Williams, to second.  Freshman Brittani Yost (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) pinch ran for Aguero and moved to second on a wild pitch.  A fly ball to right field by Hanson plated Finley and moved Yost to third. 

Following a pitching change, Wedemeier walked to put runners on the corners.  A double to left field by Morningstar plated boht Wedemeier and Yost.  Zaugg finished the game with her second home run of the season, plating Morningstar to conclude the game by run rule.

Kramer earned the win in the nightcap, throwing 5.1 innings.  She gave up just five hits, while striking out eight.  Simon earned her first save of the season, as she struck out the only two batters she faced.

Coe will return to action on Wednesday at Clark Field.  The Kohawks host Dubuque in an Iowa Conference doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
