CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Sophomore Ashlee Simon (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) became the fifth Kohawk to record 500 or more strikeouts Wednesday, as Coe swept the University of Dubuque 1-0 and 4-1.  Simon recorded 13 strikeouts in the opener and five in the nightcap.
The first game was an offensive struggle, as neither team had a runner reach base until Coe sophomore Amanda Hanson (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) reached on an error in the bottom of the third.  The first hit of the game came with two outs in the fourth inning, as senior Chelsea Zaugg (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) doubled to left center.  Zaugg was thrown out at home, trying to score on a double by fellow senior Mackenzie Lang (Urbandale, Iowa/Johnston).

The Spartans earned their first hit with two outs in the sixth inning.  After a walk by Erin Evans broke up the perfect game by Simon, Susan Danielewski singled to left center for the Spartans only hit of the game.

While the Spartans left a runner on base, the Kohawks answered with the game's only run in the sixth.  With one out, senior Abby Wedemeier (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) tripled down the right field line.  A ground ball kept Wedemeier at third, but with two outs, Zaugg reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Wedemeier to score.

Simon improved to 17-6 on the season with the win.  After striking out the first nine batters she faced, Simon finished the game with 13 strikeouts.

Both offenses came alive in the first inning of the nightcap, as six of the game's nine hits happened in the first frame.  The Spartans struck first, as Danielewski doubled to left center and later scored as Christina Chamberlain reached on an error.

Coe quickly answered with a one-out home run by freshman Callie Morningstar (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon).  Following Morningstar's third home run of the season, Zaugg doubled to left center.  Zaugg and Lang, who reached on a walk, moved to second and third on a wild pitch.  Sophomore Sidney Ridout (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) doubled to right center, plating Zaugg and Lang.  Ridout scored the final run of the game, as she was driven in on a double to left center by senior Katie Kramer (Nevada, Iowa/Ames).

Kramer earned the win for the Kohawks, as she struck out four in 4.1 innings in the circle.  She gave up just three hits.  Simon earned her second save of the season in 2.2 innings, while giving up no hits and striking out five.

Coe returns to action on Saturday, as they host fourth-ranked Luther.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
