CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe used a balanced attack Tuesday afternoon to sweep a doubleheader from Iowa Conference rival Cornell. Coe took both games 7-0, as they tallied 18 hits in two games, while holding the Rams to five hits.
Coe used a pair of one-out walks to start the scoring in the second inning of the first game. With Freshman
Kaileb Armbruster (DeSoto, Mo./DeSoto) on second and junior
Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) on first, both runners moved up on a fielding error by the pitcher during a rundown. With two outs, sophomore
Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) walked to load the bases. A single through the left side by freshman
Nick Stein (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) drove in Armbruster and Velvick.
After a 1-2-3 inning by the Rams, the Kohawks put three more runs on the scoreboard. Senior
Ryan Schisler (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) singled up the middle. A double by junior
Kevin Schuver (Marion, Iowa/Marion) moved Schisler to third. Armbruster used a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Schisler. Following a Velvick walk, senior
Jacob Schwind (Burlington, Iowa/Notre Dame) doubled to left center, plating Velvick and Schuver.
Coe added a single run in both the fourth and fifth innings to conclude the scoring. Sophomore
Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) doubled down the right field line on a 3-1 pitch to start the fourth inning. Back-to-back walks by senior
Pat Richmond (Algonquin, Ill./Algonquin) and Schisler loaded the bases for Schuver. Nisenson scored on a fielders choice by Schuver.
DeAngelis doubled off the right center fence to begin the fifth inning. With one out, Nisenson reached on a fielding error by the first baseman, moving DeAngelis to third. DeAngelis would then score, as Richmond reached on a fielder choice.
Senior
Cody Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) improved to 4-5 on the year with the win. He struck out four in five innings on the hill, while allowing just one hit.
Coe scored a pair of early runs in the nightcap to set the tone. With one out, Velvick doubled down the left field line. With two outs, Schisler singled to left center, plating Velvick for the first run of the game.
Senior
Nick Robertson (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) led off the second inning with a single up the middle. Armbruster grounded out for the first out of the inning, but Robertson was able to move to second on the play. After stealing third, Robertson scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Schwind.
Following a scoreless third inning, Robertson doubled to right center with one out for the first hit of the fourth inning. Another groundout to third base by Armbruster advanced Robertson. Robertson scored his second run of the game on a double to left center by sophomore
John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown).
The Kohawks lit up the scoreboard with four runs in the fifth inning to seal the win. Stein led off the inning with his ninth home run of the season. With nine homers, Stein has the most home runs for the Kohawks in over five seasons. Velvick followed the home run with a triple to right center. With one out, Schisler singled up the middle, plating Velvick. Schuver then hit his second home run of the season, plating Schisler, for the final runs of the game.
Senior
Alec Lewis (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) improved to a league best 8-0 win the win. He struck out six, while giving up just two hits in seven innings of work.
Coe returns to action on Saturday, as they host Wisconsin-Platteville in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Daniels Park.
