CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe men's tennis team closed the dual meet regular season with a 9-0 win over Loras Friday at the Clark Racquet Center. With the win, the Kohawks improved to 15-7 overall and 7-1 in the Iowa Conference this year.
Coe jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Juniors
Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and
Scott Stegemann (Davenport, Iowa/Central) were 8-2 winners over Erik Becker and Jared Levy at number one doubles. Rausas then beat Joey Holguin 6-0, 6-1 at number two singles.
The closest doubles match came at number two, as senior
Greg Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./West) and freshman
Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) defeated Holguin and John Blesz 8-5. Janssen was also a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Levy at number one singles, while Newman defeated Becker 6-1, 6-2 at number four singles.
Coe earned the first shutout of the day at number three doubles. Sophomore
Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) and freshman
Kyle Tucker (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) beat Joe Golba and Pat Hopson 8-0. Khristenko then beat Blesz 6-1, 6-2 at number three singles, while Tucker was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Justin Steines at number six singles.
Sophomore
Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) won the final match of the day, as he beat Adam Holland 6-0, 6-0 at number five singles.
Coe returns to action on Thursday at the Iowa Conference Team Championships. Coe will have the number two seed. The matches will be played
at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Center in
Iowa City.
