IOWA CITY, Iowa - Following a 5-0 win over Central in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference Championships, Coe was defeated 5-2 by Luther in the championship match. It was the eighth time in the last nine years the two schools have met for the title.Coe jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Central following doubles play. Juniors
Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and
Scott Stegemann (Davenport, Iowa/Central) were 8-2 winners over Dan Bowser and Bryn Boswell at number one doubles. Both players were up a set in singles when the match ended.
At number two doubles, senior
Greg Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./West) and freshman
Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) beat Pat Daly and Jacob Dreyer 8-0. Newman was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Jacob Veldhuizen at number five singles. Janssen was up a set at number one singles when the match ended.
Sophomore
Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) and freshman
Kyle Tucker (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) beat Thomas Golzin and Veldhuizen 8-0 at number three doubles. Khristenko beat Boswell 6-0, 6-0 at number four singles to seal the win.
Coe earned wins from Rausa and Stegemann at number one doubles, along with a singles win by Rausa at number two in the loss to Luther.
Individual and doubles championships start tomorrow at Veterans Memorial Tennis Courts and at Coe's Clark Racquet Center.
