DUBUQUE, Iowa - Coe won six events Saturday at the University of Dubuque - Sol Butler Classic to open the season. Five wins came by individuals, including a new school record, while the sixth was a relay.
Coe opened the meet with two top-three finishes in the 55-meter hurdles. In the preliminaries, senior
Alisa Denny (Runnells, Iowa/PCM) broke her own meet record with a time of 8.71. In the finals, she won the event with an 8.86, while sophomore
Sara Heizer (Milliken, Colo./Roosevelt) was third in 8.99. On the men's side, sophomore Jared Kuehner (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) was second in the prelims in 8.10 and finished third in the finals with an 8.20.
In the women's 55-meter dash, sophomore
Stefani Wright (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) finished third in 7.52. Coe took the top-two spots in the women's 400-meter dash, with Heizer winning in 1:00.49 and freshman Kelli Springer (Cumming, Iowa/Norwalk) finishing second in 1:03.41. Springer's time broke the meet record by three seconds.
The Kohawks earned another win and broke a school record in the women's 600-meter run. Finishing in a time of 1:35.41, junior
Keelie Finnel (Francis Creek, Wis./Mischicot) broke her own meet record from last season and broke a 21-year old school record in the event. Liz Messerly held the previous record from 1989 with a time of 1:37.40.
Coe added another meet record with a win in the 800-meter run. Senior
Justine Screws (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) ran a 2:22.63, breaking the meet record by eight seconds. In the women's 200-meter dash, Coe added a pair of top-two finishes from Wright and FInnel, along with another meet record. Wright finished in 26.56, taking home first place honors and a new meet record, while Finnel was second in 26.59.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Coe won with a new meet record in 4:08.28, winning by over six seconds. In the men's shot put, sophomore
Eric Ritter (Iowa City, Iowa/West) was second with a throw of 44' 7.5".
The high jump saw two top-three finishes for the men and women. Springer was third for the women with a height of 5' 1", while Kuehener tied for second on the men's side with a jump of 6' 1.5". The triple jump saw freshman Kirstin Franklin (Greeley, Colo./West) finish third with a jump of 33' 8.75". Coe closed the meet with a second place finish in the men's weight throw, as senior
Dale Anderson (Galva, Ill./Galva) threw a 48' 11.75".
The Kohawks will return to action next Saturday, as they travel to the Cornell Quad.
