CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe men's tennis team got back on the winning track in a big way Sunday afternoon, as they beat Iowa Conference foe Luther 5-4. The teams split singles play, but Coe took two of three doubles matches from the four-time defending IIAC champions.
In doubles play, Coe opened with wins at number two and three. At number two doubles, sophomore
Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore
Kyle Tucker (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) beat Aaron Gendron and Harrison Whiteley 8-5. Newman was also a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Gendron at number five singles. At number three doubles,
Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and
Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) beat Max Peipkorn and Tyler Zinnecker 8-3.
At number two singles, senior
Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) beat Whiteley 6-3, 7-5. Whiteley was ranked 25th in the central region. Coe's final singles win came from
Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) at number six, as he beat Samriddh Burman 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
The Kohawks will return to action on Friday, as they travel to Wartburg. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. in Waverly.
