Kohawks down Pioneers 7-2

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe won five of six singles matches, and the top two doubles matches, in a match of two teams ranked in the ITA Central Region top 13. The Kohawks improved to 13-7 overall, while dropping Grinnell to 18-5 overall with a 7-2 decision.
At number one doubles, sophomore Michelle Schupbach (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) and freshman Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) beat Laura Krull and Sadhana Athreya 8-4. Schupbach was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Constanza Alarcon at number two singles, while Lucero beat Clothilde Thirouin 6-1, 6-0 at number three singles.
Senior Hannah Jensen (Iowa City, Iowa/West) and sophomore Sara Ohlman (Washington, Ill./Washington) beat Alarcon and Catherine Fitch 8-3 at number two doubles. Jensen also beat Krull 7-6, 6-2 at number one singles as Ohlman beat Athreya 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 at number four singles.
Coe's final win came from senior Natalie Bordignon (Robbins, Iowa/Xavier) at number five singles. Bordignon beat Fitch 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.
The Kohawks will return to action this weekend, as they travel to Grand Valley State on Friday and Kalamazoo College on Saturday.
