CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe came away with a 5-4 win over Grinnell Sunday in a match of two teams ranked in the top 13 in the ITA Central region. The Kohawks, ranked 13th, took four of six singles matches from the 11th-ranked Pioneers to set up the win.
The Kohawks trailed 2-1 after doubles play, as freshman
Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior
Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) beat Ishan Bhadkamkar and Martin Dluhos 9-8 at number three doubles. Coe fell at number one doubles 8-4 and number two 9-8.
Coe dropped the top two singles spots, but won positions 3-6 to earn the win. At number three, senior
Scott Stegemann (Davenport, Iowa/Central) beat Dluhos 6-3, 7-6. At number four, junior
Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) rallied for a 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 win over Colin Johnson.
At number five singles, sophomore
Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) beat Bhadkamkar 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Freshman
Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) sealed the win with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win over Daniel Nellis at number six singles.
The Kohawks will return to action this weekend with two split squad matches. One team will travel to Grand Valley State and Kalamazoo on Friday and Saturday, while another team will travel to Knox to face Eureka and Knox.
