CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Sophomore
Nick Stein (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) swung at the first pitch in the bottom of the 12th inning, sending the ball over the left field fence for a walk-off home run against Mount Mercy. The 7-6 win was the 26th this year for Coe, the second most in school history.
Mount Mercy scored the first two runs of the game on a two-out home run by Paul Franco in the top of the first inning. Coe cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) walked on four pitches and moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior
Tyler Leadley (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) grounded out to shortstop, moving DeAngelis to third. Another ground ball to shortstop, this time from Stein, plated DeAngelis.
The Mustangs broke things open with three runs on four hits in the top of the second inning, but that would be the last of their runs in regulation. Coe got back in the game with two runs on three hits in the fifth. Junior
John Logan (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) singled to third base to start the inning. Senior
Ryan Velvick (Swisher, Iowa/Prairie) tied the school record with his ninth career triple to right center, plating Logan. A single up the middle by junior
Brennan Melloy (Bernard, Iowa/Cascade) plated Velvick.
With two outs, Stein reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth. Junior
Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) singled to left field, moving Stein to second. Junior
Sean Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) hit a single to left field, plating Stein.
Coe sent the game to extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Melloy walked on four-straight pitches. Melloy then stole second and scored on a single to right center by DeAngelis.
Mount Mercy took the lead in the top of the 10th with a two-out single through the left side. Coe fought back again, tying the game without getting a hit. Stein walked to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Sobba moved Stein to second. Stein moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball by freshman
Dalton Combs (Marion, Iowa/Marion).
All it took was one pitch in the bottom of the 12th for Stein to end the game, giving the Kohawks their 26th win of the season. Raisch and Melloy led the Kohawks with two hits apiece. Stein drove in two runs and scored three.
Freshman
Brenden Drahn (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) improved to 2-1 on the hill, throwing just the 12th inning. He gave up a hit and struck out one. Freshman
Josh Gordon (Earlham, Iowa/Earlham) started the game, giving up five runs on eight hits in five innings. He also struck out four. Sophomore
Jerry Ellendson (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) added four innings of scoreless baseball on the mound, striking out one and giving up three hits.
The Kohawks will return to Iowa Conference play this weekend. With the best record in the Iowa Conference, the Kohawks will travel to Simpson for a three-game series. The Storm sit in third place in a tight three-way battle between Coe, Wartburg and Simpson for the IIAC title. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in Indianola.
