CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College trailed early, but fought back to take a 3-0 Iowa Conference match from Simpson Wednesday night. The win was the fourth shutout in the last five matches for the Kohawks, who improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in league play with the win.
Simpson held a 22-16 lead in the first set, but Coe battled back to take a 27-25 win in the set. Coe had 14 kills and just two errors in the opening set, as they hit .400. Freshman
Rachel Schaefer (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) tallied six kills and just one error in the first set.
The Kohawks hit just .108 in the second set, but the Storm hit .081 as Coe won the set 25-21. The two teams combined for just 18 kills in the set.
Coe came out firing in the third set, hitting .281 and taking the set 25-16. Senior
Molly Steffens (Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque) had five kills without committing an error in the third set.
Schaefer and Steffens led the Kohawks with 11 and 10 kills respectively. For Simpson, Steph Keller had 10 of the teams 34 kills. Junior
Emily Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) had a match-high 33 assists, while also tallying a service ace and six digs.
Sophomore
Megan Barron (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) had four aces, while Schaefer added two. Junior
Brittany Shickell (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had a match-high 12 digs. Steffens and Barron joined her in double-figures with 10 digs apiece. Senior
Kaitlin McClimon (DeWitt, Iowa/Central) had four solo blocks and two block assists.
The Kohawks will be off this weekend, but return to Iowa Conference play on Tuesday with a trip to Wartburg. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in Waverly against the 24th-ranked Knights.
