
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In its regular season finale, the Coe College volleyball team came out firing in a 3-0 win over Grinnell. The senior night win was the 31st of the year, breaking the school record of 30 set in 1984.
Before the match, Coe honored its two seniors Molly Steffens (Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque) and Kaitlin McClimon (DeWitt, Iowa/Central). The Kohawks were also presented with their first Iowa Conference Championship trophy before the match.
Coe's offensive attack was on fire in the first set, connecting on 12 kills without an error and hitting .545. They held the Pioneers to -.100 hitting in a 25-8 first set win. In the second set, the Pioneers hit .115, their only hitting percentage set in positive numbers, but Coe was too strong in the 25-16 win. Coe hit .367 with 14 kills in the third set, ending the match with a 25-10 victory.
Sophomore Megan Barron (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) had a match-high 10 kills. Steffens added nine and freshman Rachel Schaefer (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) pitched in five. Junior Emily Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) had a match-high 28 assists.
The Kohawks had 13 service aces on the night, with Ryan and McClimon leading the way with four apiece. Barron added three aces. Freshman Alissa Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) had a match-high 10 digs, with Steffens adding nine. Junior Brittany Shickell (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) added to her Coe career record of 1,369 with two digs on the night. McClimon and junior Christina Grimm (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) had two block assist each.
With the number one seed in next week's Iowa Conference Tournament, Coe has earned a bye in the first round. The Kohawks will host a semifinal match on Thursday at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Loras-Central match. Loras, the fourth seed, will host the fifth-seeded Dutch on Tuesday night.
