
INDIANOLA, Iowa - Coe College crowned three individual champions Saturday at the Simpson Invitational, as they won the team title by a point. Coe tallied 215.5 points, beating defending National Champion Wartburg for the title.
At 125 pounds, sophomore Jimmy Gotto (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) went 3-2 on the day, finishing fifth. Two of Gotto's wins came by fall in the second round and technical fall in the quarterfinals. Coe's first champion came at 133 pounds, as senior Jordan Westfall (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) went 4-0 to win the title. In the quarterfinals, Westfall beat Simpson's Spencer Courier by major decision 11-3. Courier was ranked ninth in the country. In the semifinals, Westfall beat Travis Evans of Grand View, the third ranked wrestler in the country in NAIA, 3-0.
Senior James Locke (Minneapolis, Minn./South) finished second at 149 pounds, dropping a 10-9 decision to William Penn's Eric Burgey in the finals. Burgey is ranked first in the nation in NAIA. Locke advanced to the finals with a 9-2 win over TJ Moen of Grand View, ranked 12th in the nation in NAIA.
The Kohawks crowned a second champion at 157 pounds, as senior Dale Handley (Toddville, Iowa/Alburnett) was 5-0 on the day, with three wins earning bonus points. After earning wins by technical fall, major decision and fall, Handley beat Grand View's Chad Lowman, ranked ninth in the nation in NAIA, 8-4.
Coe crowned a third champion at 165 pounds, as senior Nick LeClere (Coggon, Iowa/North-Linn) went 4-0, earning bonus points with his first three wins. In the finals, LeClere beat Grand View's Brad Lower, ranked third in the nation in NAIA, 8-3. Also at 165 pounds, sophomore Will Hansen (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) went 4-2 on the day, finishing fourth. His two losses were to Lower and Wartburg's Landon Williams, who was ranked third in the nation.
At 174 pounds, junior Scott King (Tipton, Iowa/Tipton), advanced to the finals before falling 7-3 to Grand View's Ty Knowler, ranked second in the nation in NAIA. At 184 pounds, Ethan Ball (Aledo, Ill./Mercer County) and Ryan Sheldon (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) finished third and fourth, combining for five bonus point wins.
Freshman Donnie Horner (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) finished second at 197 pounds, dropping a 3-2 finals match to Nic Leither of Northwestern (Iowa). Leither was ranked second in the nation in the NAIA rankings entering the tournament. Earlier this week, Horner lost a match on riding time to Buena Vista's Brian Broll, ranked sixth in the nation. Horner advanced to the finals with a 3-1 win over Broll at the Simpson Invite. At heavyweight, junior Alex Burkle (Coggon, Iowa/North-Linn) finished second, advancing to the finals with a pair of bonus point wins. In the finals, Burkle lost an 8-4 decision to Wartburg's Byron Tate. Tate is a two-time National Champion at 197 pounds and is currently the top-ranked wrestler at that weight in the nation.
The Kohawks return to action on Friday night, as they will participate in the "Duals at the Dells." Coe will face second-ranked Wisconsin-LaCrosse and 15th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.
