
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College track and field team broke a school record and turned in a top 50 national height in the high jump at the Cornell Invitational Saturday. The Coe men finished third, while the women were fourth.
Junior Stefani Wright (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) opened the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash in 8.24. Her time broke the school record of 8.84 previously set by Audrey Decker in 2007. Wright also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.75. In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Kellie Springer (Cumming, Iowa/Norwalk) was sixth in 1:05.90.
Sophomore Sara Heizer (Milliken, Colo./Roosevelt) placed fifth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:44.93. In the 800-meter run, sophomore Taylor Wolf (West Branch, Iowa/West Branch) was second in 2:40.48. Senior Keelie Finnel (Francis Creek, Wis./Mishicot) won the mile run with a time of 5:31.57. Finnel also finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:20.47.
Coe's 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams both finished third. The 4x200 team finished in 1:56.04, while the 4x400 ran a 4:40.08. In the high jump, Springer was second with a height of 4' 11", while junior Cassandra Morigaki (Hilo, Hawaii/Waiakea) was fourth at 4' 11". Freshman Ashley Boleyn (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 36' 3".
On the men's side, junior Dennis Gilbertson (Hayfield, Minn./Hayfield) was sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.40. Gilbertson also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.99. In the 800-meter run, senior Kory Heineman (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) was fourth in 2:08.15. Sophomore Josh Minard (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) placed second in the 1,000-meter run in 2:45.83, while junior Charles Dewar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) was fifth in 2:54.31.
The Kohawks took the top-two spots in the mile run, as junior Andrew Dewar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) won in 4:32.66 and sophomore Shea Devine (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) was second in 4:34.23. Junior Jared Kuehner (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.64. Coe's 4x200-meter relay team finished second in 1:37.79, while the 4x400-meter relay team was fifth in 3:40.70.
Coe took second and third in the high jump, as Kuehner had the 49th best jump in the country at 6' 2". Freshman Alexis Kombwa (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) was third at 5' 10". Kombwa won the triple jump at 39' 7 1/4", while Marcus Haustein (Pella, Iowa/Pella) was second at 38' 8 1/4". In the shot put, Jacob Seaton (Riverside, Iowa/Highland) was fourth with a throw of 43' 9 3/4".
The Kohawks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, as they participate in the Northern Iowa Invite in Cedar Falls.
