
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for 28 season-best times Friday night, including two of the six best times in school history, as they split with Morningside. The Kohawk women won 128-102.
Swimming as an exhibition, the Kohawk men's 200-yard medley relay turned in its best time of the year in 2:05.07. Coe's relay team included freshman Aaron Buseman (Niwot, Colo./Niwot), sophomore Colin Conway (Wauwatosa, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran), junior Zachary Ahles (Andover, Minn./Andover) and freshman Martin Benoit-Xavier Guilla (Phalenpin, France/Deforest de Leuarde).
In the women's 1,000-yard free, freshman Kenni Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) was second in 11:37.32, while freshman Nichole Lattin (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) cut :35 off her previous career-best, finishing fourth in 12:24.59. On the men's side, Conway cut :12 off his previous best time, finishing second in 12:34.23.
Freshman Lindsay Meade (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) was second in the 200-yard free in 2:11.16, while sophomore Haley Otis (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling) and junior Rebekah Isack (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) placed fourth and fifth with season-best times. Otis clocked in at 2:23.97, while Isack finished in 2:37.94. On the men's side, Ahles had his best performance of the year, finishing second in 2:10.10.
Coe took the top-three spots in the women's 50-yard free, with freshman Erica Czajka (Denver, Colo./George Washington) winning the event with the fifth-best time in school history (25.58). Sophomore Andi Queisner (Fort Madison, Iowa/Fort Madison) was second in 26.15 and Ickes was third in 26.76. It was a season-best for Queisner and Ickes as well. On the men's side, Buseman had a season-best in 24.99, placing second.
In the 200-yard IM, Coe went 3-4-5, all finishing with season-best times. Senior Darci Schultz (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur) was third in 2:27.81, while junior Kelly Strohm (Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Regis Jesuit) was fourth in 2:35.67. Sophomore Chole Drapes (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood) was fifth in 3:03.69.
On the one-meter diving board, Rebecca Herman (Iowa City, Iowa/West) won with a score of 215.10, while junior Elizabeth Curley (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) was second with a 151.94. Junior Ken Otton (Mesa, Ariz./Skyline) won the men's side with a 141.30. On the three-meter board, Herman won with a 189.07, while Curley was second with a 159.45. Otton won the men's event with a 152.92.
Czajka won the 100-yard fly with a 1:04.88, while Meade was third in 1:09.51. Drapes turned in a season-best time with a fifth-place finish in 1:37.81. On the men's side, Conway had a season-best in 1:15.97, finishing second. Coe had the top-two times in the 100-yard free, with four Kohawks having season-best times. Queisner won in 57.95, while Ickes was second in 59.27. Strohm placed fourth in 1:03.10, while Isack was sixth in 1:07.61. On the men's side, Buseman (56.23) and Guilla (1:01.67) both had season-best times with second and third place finishes.
In the 100-yard back, Sterns won with a season-best time of 1:06.30, while Schultz also had a season-best time placing third in 1:08.18. In the 500-yard free, Meade was third in 5:53.80, while Lattin was fourth in 6:05.60. On the men's side, Ahles turned in a season best 5:51.34, placing second. In the 100-yard breast, Ickes and Lattin turned in season-best times with second and fourth place finishes. Ickes finished in 1:12.89, the sixth-best time in school history, while Lattin finished in 1:19.54. Ahles turned in an exhibition time of 1:16,41, a season best, in the 100-yard breast.
Coe finished the meet with a win in the women's 200-yard free relay. The Kohawk team of Queisner, Czajka, Schultz and Sterns turned in a 1:46.33.
The Kohawk women won 128-102, while the men lost 103-52. Coe returns to action again on Saturday, as they host Luther at the Coe Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
