
INDIANOLA, Iowa - Simpson used a 12-3 run midway through the first half and closed the opening frame on an 8-0 run, as they beat Coe 76-60 Wednesday at Cowles Fieldhouse. The Storm held a 42-24 advantage at the break.
Simpson jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first 4:31 of the game, including seven points from Chad Boston. The Kohawks used a 7-1 run to cut the lead to one with 14:02 to play in the first half, but an 11-2 run by the Storm put the lead into double-digits with 9:35 remaining in the period. The Kohawks got the lead back to nine with 5:32 left in the first half, but Simpson ended the frame on a 10-1 run.
Coe opened the first 3:35 of the season half on a 9-2 run, including back-to-back baskets by junior Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle), as the lead was cut to 11. Drew Bentley hit a 3-pointer to spark a 13-4 run, as the lead increased to 20 with 11:09 to play. With 8:43 to play, Coe went on a 13-4 run of its own, cutting the lead to 13 with 5:19 remaining, but couldn't get any closer.
Freshman JT Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) and junior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) led the Kohawks with 12 points apiece. Light and sophomore Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) joined them in double-figures with 10 points apiece, as Light surpassed 500 points for his career. With two 3-pointers, Wirth became the 12th player in school history to hit 100 treys in his career. Boston led the Storm with 19 points, while Bentley finished with 13.
Light added to his 10 points with his third double-double of the year, grabbing 11 rebounds. Vonderhaar added six boards. Senior Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) had three assists, while Mataloni dished out six and stole two passes.
The Kohawks return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Buena Vista. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Storm Lake.
