Nate Oakland was named the Head Coach of the Coe College Women's Basketball program in May of 2015. It is the second stint on the Kohawk staff for Oakland, as he also served as an assistant coach under former Head Coach Randi (Peterson) Henderson from 2009-2011.
Oakland comes to Coe after spending the previous four years as an assistant coach at Wartburg College. Oakland's day-to-day duties at Wartburg included recruiting, scouting, individual instruction and film editing. The Knights led the nation in 3-point shooting percentage at 38.8 during the 2011-12 season. During his time at Wartburg, Oakland also served as the head coach for the men's golf team for three years.
During his two years at Coe, the Kohawks shared the Iowa Conference regular season Championship in 2010 and 2011. The 2011 team won a school record 26 games, as they advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Oakland also spent three years as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa and one season as the assistant coach at Minnesota-Morris.
Oakland has also worked numerous basketball camps during the summer, including Snow Valley, Fred Hoiberg Basketball Camps, Northern Iowa Basketball Camps, Tim Floyd/Larry Eustachy Basketball School, North Dakota State and the Chicago Bulls Basketball Academy.
A Cedar Falls native, Oakland graduated from Northern Iowa in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Psychology. He also earned a Masters in Physical Education from Northern Iowa in 2011. Oakland is married to the former Alex Cook, a three-time All-Missouri Valley First Team selection at Northern Iowa. Alex is one of four players in Missouri Valley history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. The couple has four children (Jordann, Eli, Kaiden and Quinncy).
One of the most decorated players in school history, Kayla Waskow returned to Coe in June of 2015 as an assistant coach. The Dunkerton native played five years for the Kohawks, earning a medical redshirt after playing in just nine games as a freshman. After graduation from Coe in 2013, Waskow became a graduate assistant at Aurora University, where she earned a Masters of Business Administration degree in 2015.
Waskow currently owns 14 school records, while ranking in the top five in 29 categories. Waskow set three single-season records in 2011-12 for points scored (445), field goals made (168) and free throws attempted (150). She is also Coe's career leader in points (1,583), field goals made (599), free throws made (364), rebounds (695), games played (118), games started (92) and minutes played (3,068). She also owns the single-game record for rebounds with 20 against Buena Vista on Jan. 14, 2012, a night she also scored 28 points in one of the most dominating performances in school history.
A two-year captain, Waskow played on Coe's first two NCAA Tournament teams. Coe advanced to at least the second round in both appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2011. Waskow was a three-time All-Iowa Conference First Team selection, while also being named the Iowa Conference MVP in 2011-12. She is the only Kohawk in school history to have earned MVP honors in women's basketball.
