

Mourer spent three years as an assistant coach at Coe before taking over the head coaching duties in December of 2011. Mourer replaced Elaine Rydze, who retired after 18 years of leading the Kohawks.
While also serving as the distance coach for the Kohawk Track and field program, Mourer is USATF Level One certified. During his time at Coe, Mourer has coached one Iowa Conference Champion, three NCAA National Qualifiers and eight All-Iowa Conference runners in Cross Country. In track, he has guieded four Iowa Conference Champions, three provisional national qualifiers and six All-Iowa Conference runners. He also teaches in the physical education department.
Before coming to Coe, Mourer was a successful distance runner at Allegheny College. Between cross country and track he was a member of 12 conference championship teams and was an individual all-conference selection 11 times.
On the national scene, Mourer competed in two NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships, helping lead his team to top ten finishes both times, including a third place finish in 2006. On the track, he competed in the 5k at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor National Championships.
Mourer holds a BA in History from Allegheny College. He will be working toward a Masters Degree in Education at Coe. He will also be helping coach distance athletes with Coe's Track and Field Programs during the winter and spring seasons.


A lifelong runner, Jim Cottingham was a cross country and track and field captain at the University of Chicago, where he still ranks among the all-time top 10 performers at 800 meters.
Following graduation, he continued competition for nine years as a middle distance runner for the University of Chicago Track Club. During this time he also worked as the assistant coach of the University of Chicago varsity team and the University of Chicago Track Club. In this capacity he worked with track and cross country athletes at all levels, including beginners, collegiate cross country All-Americans, elite post-collegiate athletics, and a few world record holders.
Cottingham began coaching cross country at Coe in 1995, where he is also a professor of physics and a world-recognized researcher in the field of acoustics. Coach Cottingham is also a former assistant track coach at Coe and is the head boys' track and field coach at West Branch High School.
